Workplace Supervisor Skill Set
This course provides managers and supervisors with the knowledge and skills to support apprentices and trainees. This course describes the skills and knowledge required to establish and develop a professional mentoring relationship with an individual in a workplace.
It applies to workplace supervisors or other work colleagues who work under limited supervision and who have responsibility for mentoring one or more individuals in the workplace. This may include, but is not limited to, those who mentor an apprentice or trainee employed by, or undertaking a work placement within, an organisation.
Upon the completion of this training, you will be awarded the national skill set of:
- TAESS00017 - Workplace Supervisor Skill set
which contains these units of competency of:
- TAEASS301 - Contribute to assessment
- TAEDEL301 - Provide work skill instruction
- TAEDEL404 - Mentor in the workplace
This course will allow workplace leaders to play a vital role in achieving and maintaining safety standards in the workplace. These leaders within the workplace are paramount in promoting a culture in which safety is a priority and workplace injuries are not acceptable.
Resources Industry Leadership includes activities which require demonstrated capability:
- Complete written records and logs
- Write shift reports
- Create a meeting agenda
- Conduct and participate in pre-start meetings
- Document actions arising from meetings
- Develop performance plans and KPIs
- Deliver inductions and toolbox talks
- Reference and understand legislation, standards and codes of practice
- Read and apply policies and procedures
- Communicate work information electronically, using email, phones and radios

Prior to attending this course, you are required to provide evidence of at least 12 months’ supervisory experience in which you have regularly engaged in the following activities:
- Conducting prestart meetings
- Presenting toolbox meetings
- Completing personal risk assessments, i.e. Take 5, Step Back 2×2
- Completing incident reports
- Completing written reports and records
- Creating written agendas and minutes
- Developing performance plans and KPIs
This qualification reflects the role of individuals in a variety of Business Services job roles. It is likely that these individuals are establishing their own work performance.
The qualification has core and elective units of competency that cover the skills for the following one (1) general business and four (4) specialist business specialisations:
- Specialisation 1 – Customer Engagement
- Specialisation 2 – Business Administration
- Specialisation 3 – Records and Information Management
Individuals in these roles carry out a range of routine procedural, clerical, administrative or operational tasks that require technology and business skills. They apply a broad range of competencies using some discretion, judgment and relevant theoretical knowledge. They may provide technical advice and support to a team.

Leadership and Management Qualifications
This qualification reflects the role of individuals working as developing and emerging leaders and managers in a range of enterprise and industry contexts.
As well as assuming responsibility for their own performance, individuals at this level are likely to provide leadership, guidance and support to others. They may also have some responsibility for organising and monitoring the output of teams.
They apply solutions to a defined range of predictable and unpredictable problems, and analyse and evaluate information from a variety of sources.

This qualification reflects the role of individuals who apply knowledge, practical skills and experience in leadership and management across a range of enterprise and industry contexts.
Individuals at this level display initiative and judgement in planning, organising, implementing and monitoring their own workload and the workload of others. They use communication skills to support individuals and teams to meet organisational or enterprise requirements.
They may plan, design, apply and evaluate solutions to unpredictable problems, and identify, analyse and synthesise information from a variety of sources.
